The Asphalt Content/Binder Furnace with internal automatic balance is an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective method for the accurate determination of asphalt content. Developed by NCAT, the National Center for Asphalt Technology. Furnace‘s large capacity handles samples up to 4,000 grams. Ignition method reduces testing time compared to solvent testing methods and automatic operation frees technicians for other tasks. Temperature range is: 392 to 1202°F (200 to 650°C). Accurate internal balance monitors weights automatically throughout ignition to within ±0.1 gram. Easy operation— simply enter sample weight, calibration factor, load the sample, and push start, when unit beeps at test end, push stop, and sign receipt. Door safety features, such as a software-activated door lock, an automatic interlock that cuts power when door is open, full 180 degree door opening and door hinge lock eliminate harmful solvents and make operation easy. Chamber dimensions: 14"W x 10.5"H x 14"D (355 x 266 x 355mm). Overall dimensions: 21.75"W x 36.75"H x 25.75"D (552 x 933 x 654mm). 240V 60Hz, 20 amp, 4,800 watt operation.

HM-378 Gilson Economy Model Binder Ignition System
Gilson's original proven HM-378 Binder Ignition System offers a true Economy Model option. Most specifications permit use of a furnace without internal loss-of-mass measurement (scale), and results have proven to be equal or better than with the automatic systems. Please check with local agency to see what they approve.
In a binder ignition test, as asphalt is burned the temperature rises substantially above setpoint, peaks, and gradually returns to setpoint as burnoff nears completion. In the HM-378 model, the furnace is user programmed to remain locked for a designated time after return of temperature to setpoint. This time delay, or de-coking period, is based on user experience with sample types and/or specification requirements. If test completion is in doubt or when determining the time delay to program for a new sample type, the sample is merely returned to the furnace for 5 to 10 minute added times until completion is confirmed.
The stainless steel case has a drop door to serve as a shelf for ease of sample tray handling. Heating elements are quality Kanthal A-1 and easily accessible for inexpensive replacement if necessary. The controller has memory for up to ten timed programs with selected chamber and afterburner setpoints. Two sets of HMA-69 Sample Tray, Screen and Lid are included. The HM-378 is shipped ready to operate on 240V, 1-Phase, 50/60Hz power supply but is easily field-converted for voltages from 208 to 380 as well as 3-Phase systems.
HM-278 SHRP Gyratory Compactor
The SHRP Gyratory Compactor meets all ASTM and AASHTO requirements and the compact, transportable design makes it ideal for use on-site or in the lab. The Compactor includes a PC, required for process control and data storage via the RS-232 port. Operational software and calibration equipment are included at no additional cost, making it the best value for a Superpave Compactor. This safe, easy-to-use unit has a proven track record for producing accurate, consistent results. The South Central Superpave Center found this compactor to be "...comparable 12 out of 12 times, a perfect rate of comparison."
Ergonomic design allows the user to charge the mold or compact and extract the specimen, all without lifting the mold. Built-in, power-assisted specimen extractor means no hand pumping. The see-through door and completely enclosed, illuminated chamber permit continuous observation throughout the compaction cycle. Additional safety features include a large emergency stop button and a switch that halts gyration when the door guard is opened.
Angle of gyration is preset at 1.25°, but is adjustable from 0.5° to 2.0°. Gyration rate is 30 rpm. Consolidation pressure can be set from 200 to 1000 kPa and adjustable ram traval speed is factory set at 10mm/sec. Specimen height is continuously measured during compaction to ±0.1mm. Cabinet dimensions are 21.1x28x63" (536x711x1600mm), WxDxH. Compactor operates on 120V/60Hz electrical supply; inquire for 230V/50Hz option availability. Compactor is shipped with PC, Gyratory Software, 150mm Mold with bottom plate, 150mm Piston Face and Gyratory Calibration Device. Compactor may be ordered equipped to compact 100mm specimens; inquire for a quotation. Extra Mold assemblies for 100mm and 150mm specimens are available by ordering Molds and Bottom Plates together.
