SIADG Asphalt Depth Gauge
The Asphalt Depth Gauge is a great tool for the inspector on your job. No need to step onto blacktop for testing depth of asphalt or curb height.  Paver operator need not step off paver or bend over to check depth of asphalt!  The Asphalt Depth Gauge is lubricated and will not pull on asphalt or leave a large hole that the roller will not close, lube oil will not contaminate asphalt and will clean probe each time it is retracted back into tool.
ASE Asphalt Highway Straightedge Checking Tool
Asphalt Highway Paving Straightedge Checking Tool.  Available in 6' to 12' lengths, with fold down handle and inserted level.
HM-598 Pavement Quality Indicator
The Pavement Quality Indicator (PQI) produces fast, accurate and repeatable in-place density and temperature measurements of asphalt pavement. Instantaneous density and temperature readings help field personnel establish more effective roller patterns and ensure pavement densities are within targeted range. It quickly identifies tender zones and segregated areas, rapidly profiles densities in critical areas such as wheel paths, longitudinal joints, and unconfined edges, and evaluates pavement sections for coring. The PQI is particularly effective on projects that requiring rapid gathering of results for QC/QA analysis. The results are displayed within seconds. Up to 99 readings can be stored by station, location, date and time for later downloading to user’s PC or laptop.

The PQI uses low level, low frequency, electrical impedance technology and is completely non-nuclear. It utilizes an innovative toroidal electrical sensing field created within the asphalt pavement to monitor changes in electrical impedance. Measuring depth is about 1 to 4" (25 to 100mm). Pavement densities in selectable pounds per cubic foot or kilograms per cubic meter are shown on the 4-line, backlit display. Readings of percent air voids are also possible. Accurate density measurements are obtained without the need for expensive nuclear gauge training and certification. There is no need to be concerned about radiation safety monitoring or cumbersome regulations. Warm-up time is not necessary and test results are nearly instantaneous. Significantly lighter weight of the PQI makes prolonged use more convenient for field personnel.

The PQI includes a 12-volt DC, 4.0 amp/hr NiMH battery. Recharge time for the battery is approximately 4 hours with included fast charger. Continuous operational time of the fully charged battery is 13 hours. HM-598 includes fast charge 120 Vac battery charger, 12VDC adapter and shipping case. HMA-691 PQI Test block confirms internal electrical calibration, repeatability and checks for instrument drift. The Test block also can perform a two point calibration with asphalt cores.

Asphalt Permeameter

9110 4" Samples
9111 6" Samples

Laboratory Asphalt Permeameters utilize the falling head method to determine hydraulic conductivity of saturated 4" and 6" diameter asphalt cores or laboratory compacted specimens. This simple, easy to use Permeameter design is based on test procedures developed at Florida DOT.

The permeameters are self contained and ready for use. The asphalt sample is placed inside a metal cylinder and held in place by expanding discs. A rubber membrane inside the metal cylinder is pressurized to fill voids and eliminate flow down the outside of the core. Permeability of the prepared specimen is determined by timing flow from the included 500cc Manometer through the sample. Both models include a self-contained hand pump which provides vacuum to hold the membrane out against the metal cylinder during assembly as well as confining pressure to push the membrane against the core during testing. A dial gauge displays pressure applied by the hand pump. Included with each Permeameter are two 4" or two 6" Rubber Membranes. Optional Stopwatch, described elsewhere, is suitable for timing. Replacement 500cc Manometers are available. Optional 2000cc capacity Manometers are available for more permeable samples.

AP-1B NCAT Asphalt Field Permeameter Kit

AP-1B is a falling-head permeameter using Darcy’s Law to determine rate of water flow through asphalt pavement in-place. This design was selected by the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) for its close correlation with laboratory test results when using protocol developed at the center. Studies have shown that some Superpave mixes can be permeable to water even when compacted to an acceptable air void ratio. Field testing permits on the spot, accurate estimation of permeability, eliminating the need for coring, patching and laboratory testing. Corrections to mix and placement procedures can be implemented right away. Testing and subsequent calculations can usually be completed in 10 to 15 minutes by one technician. The simple procedure means no extensive training is required.

The Permeameter is a 4-tiered, graduated standpipe in two sections constructed of rugged plastic. A special sealing material is placed on the base plate. The unit is then positioned on the test site and seated against the pavement using gentle foot pressure and 4 included base weights. After filling with water, a timer is started and outflow is observed against the clearly marked graduations and timed. The smallest, uppermost tier allows rapid determinations in low-porosity pavements. The larger diameter tiers permit enough time to accurately read flow on more porous pavements. Alternate top section included in AP-1B Kit replaces the two top tiers with one larger diameter tier. This allows for extended test times on moderately permeable mats or for rapid filling when testing highly permeable mixes.
